Chillicothe is a city in and the county seat of Ross County, Ohio, United States.
Chillicothe was the first and third capital of Ohio and is located in southern Ohio along the Scioto River. The name comes from the Shawnee name Chalahgawtha, meaning "principal town", as it was a major settlement of that people. They and their ancestors inhabited the territory for thousands of years prior to European contact. At the time of European-American settlement, the community was plotted by General Nathaniel Massie on his land grant.
The population was 21,797 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's annual estimates, Chillicothe had a population of 22,296 in 2008,while the Columbus-Marion-Chillicothe, OH Combined Statistical Area has 2,002,604 people. It is the only city in Ross County and the center of the Chillicothe Micropolitan Statistical Area (as defined by the United States Census Bureau in 2003).
Chillicothe is a designated Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Auch der berühmte Shawnee-Häuptling Cornstalk entstammte dieser großen Shawnee-Gruppe. Chillicothe lag ganz nah am Rand des hohen Steilufers des Scioto River. Die landeinwärts gelegenen Seiten des Dorfes wurden durch Palisaden gesichert, die mit Weidenflechtwerk verbunden waren. Chillicothe wurde bis 1787 von den Shawnees bewohnt. Das heutige Chillicothe liegt im US-Bundesstaat Ohio im Ross County, dessen Sitz der County-Verwaltung (County Seat) es ist, und wurde von Colonel Nathaniel Massie 1796 gegründet. Im 19. Jahrhundert war Chillicothe zweimal die Hauptstadt von Ohio.

Ohio is a Midwestern state in the United States. The 34th largest state by area in the U.S., it is the 7th‑most populous with nearly 11.5 million residents, containing several major American cities and seven metropolitan areas with populations of 500,000 or more. The state's capital is Columbus. The Anglicized name "Ohio" comes from the Iroquois word ohi-yo’, meaning "great river". The state, originally partitioned from the Northwest Territory, was admitted to the Union as the 17th state (and the first under the Northwest Ordinance) on March 1, 1803. Although there are conflicting narratives regarding the origin of the nickname, Ohio is historically known as the "Buckeye State" (relating to the Ohio buckeye tree) and Ohioans are also known as "Buckeyes".
The government of Ohio is composed of the executive branch, led by the Governor; the legislative branch, which comprises the Ohio General Assembly; and the judicial branch, which is led by the Supreme Court. Currently, Ohio occupies 18 seats in the United States House of Representatives. Ohio is known for its status as both a swing state and a bellwether in national elections.
